Chris Sams, November 30, 2016

From the swoosh of Nike to the red and white lettering of Coca-Cola, a businesses brand has the ability to capture the attention of consumers transforming a small business into a thriving company.

Your brand distinguishes you from the multitude of other businesses out there. It is your product or service’s reputation. When a customer hears or sees your branding, they expect certain things from your product or service.

Brand blunders and mistakes are easy to make. Even the most established brands in the world can suffer problems with its brand. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to avoid making branding mistakes. Here are common brand mistakes and tips to help you avoid them.

Branding That Does Not Focus on Your Target Market

Your branding must focus on your target market for it to be effective. Before beginning your branding campaign, it is important to determine who your target market is. You cannot be everything to everyone. So, choose your market and focus branding efforts around that market.

Branding That Is Not Consistent

You must use the same name, tagline, and logo on everything related to your company. The company sign out front should match your company’s letterhead. Having too many different logos, images and taglines will only make it more difficult for customers to remember your brand. For people to remember your company, you must provide them with a consistent image.

Branding That Is Too Vague

Branding that reveals nothing about your business and its mission will not draw attention. Avoid vaguely, catch-all taglines. Instead, invest the money and time needed to develop a strong logo and name. Choose unique, clear images and language that people will notice and remember.

Branding That Does Not Differentiate

Your branding should focus on your core service and what you do best. If you list too many services and products, your customers will not know what your business does. If your customers do not know what it is that you do best, why would they choose your product or service? Choose your core product or service and focus branding around that service or product.
