Do you still sell SEO?

The other day I went out to dinner with a friend I had not seen in a while. It was fun to do so, since I have known this guy since high school and he was actually the one that introduced me to my wife. Anyway, we were having a nice conversation when he asked:

“Do you still sell SEO?” It was then; that I realized people had the wrong prospective on what I really do. Part of it could be that, for a while I believed that Search Engine Optimization was the answer to all Internet marketing needs, but I came to the realization that as a consultant, I have to be equipped with a lot more knowledge, tools and resources to be able to better serve my client. In a smaller scale being an Internet consultant is a lot like being the job of a doctor. No good doctor would schedule brain surgery for a patient who walked into his office claiming to have a headache. There has to be labs, studies and maybe even an MRI to determine the cause and to see if surgery would actually solve the problem. In the same way, when I am presented with a new client, I have to take the time to study them, figure out their needs, their industry and most important their goals with this Internet marketing campaign. It would be irresponsible of me to suggest Search Engine Optimization after only taking a few minutes with their website. I have seen many Internet marketing companies out there do this and it makes me upset to think that they treat this business as a “one-size-fits-all.”  There are several aspects that an SEO company uses in order to make sure your company reaches it’s goals these can include video marketing, mobile optimization, or even social networking. The truth is, whether you start with local SEO or any other product, the company or consultant that you hire, has to know your business, you needs and your goals.
