Keyword research is an integral part of any company’s SEO marketing campaign.  When working with a local SEO company, it is important that research for keywords is done correctly in order to produce the best ROI.

Through our research, we found several examples where keyword research is failing the client.  An example of this we found recently involved the keyphrase “Denver skin treatments.”  When searching through historical data, the keyphrase shows 0 registered search volume, along with several other variations of the keyphrase. While it may be simple to rank for the keyphrase, it’s unlikely to drive much traffic or many phone calls. Similar keyphrases, however, are far more competitive, but have search volumes of closer to 1000 searches per month. Take for example “Laser Hair Removal Denver” or “Botox Denver”, which have closer to a combines search volume of 1500 searches per month. These keywords take far more effort to rank for, but are much more likely to drive meaningful traffic and call volume.

There are a few things to remember when looking for keywords to provide your company with high visibility.  First, be sure that the keywords  you are targeting are actually being searched for through detailed keyword research. Secondly, it’s important to make sure that the keywords are relevant to your company and it’s services. Finally, be sure that the competition level of the keyphrases you are targeting is attainable for your websites authority level.  If we apply these three criteria to our previous keyword phrase, we would come up with much different result.
