2 Ways to Find Local Search Volumes

1. Use the Daily Impression Column in Google Adwords Traffic Estimator

Google Adwords Traffic Estimator is a tool designed to help search marketers find possible daily clicks and impressions for various keywords based on daily budgets and maximum cost per click thresholds.  Unlike Google Keyword Tool, Traffic Estimator allows you to pick a specific geographical location.   If you set Google Adwords Traffic Estimator to a Max CPC above $10,000 and a daily budget above $1,000,000,000 – Google will give you the maximum impression for any keyword in any geographical location.   In this case daily impressions is the same as search volume.

2. Use Google Keyword Tool and a Little Math

Google’s Keyword Tool is a great way to discover keywords and associated search volumes.  Unfortunately, Google’s Keyword Tool only gives you global and local search volumes.  To find the “ball park” search volume for a keyword in a local area or city simply divide the population of the local area or city by the population of the US. (approx 311 Million). This will yield the percentage of the US population that live in that area.  Now multiple that percentage by the keywords local search volume to get a search volume for your target city / area.
